Taking online tests increases the chance of cheating in comparison with paper testing. What can you do to prevent students from online cheating? Preventing students from cheating seems to be impossible with all the advanced technology out there today. Here are some tips and tricks that will help prevent cheating.

Tips and tricks to prevent cheating in an online test

Randomize questions

When taking tests, participants are often getting asked questions in the same sequence. This makes it easier for participants to cheat on their Exams. It is obviously not what you want to happen. To prevent this, you can randomize your questions.

Let's say you create a question bank of 100 questions, and for each Exam, the question bank generates an Exam with 20 questions chosen at random. So, every participant taking the Exam gets a different set of 20 questions. You can also create different categories for your questions and generate an Exam with questions picked randomly from each category.

Restrict access

Instead of making your Exam available for everyone with the link, you can restrict access to it using our invite-only feature. Read more about it here.

Control the number of attempts

You can also control the number of attempts a participant can have in an Exam. That makes it harder for him to share his link or access credentials with other people, or try to access the Exam from different devices.

Block copy-pasting

Our Exams don't allow participants to copy-paste. That's right when taking an Exam; the text doesn't allow selection and copy-pasting. Participants might try to take screenshots of the page, but that takes a lot more time and effort, and by following the other tips below, you can prevent that too.

Set a timer

Cheating (just like lying πŸ˜…) can take some time. When students are adequately prepared for their Exams, they don’t need to think for too long to fill in the right answer. Unprepared (cheating!) students can take some time to finish their Exams. A solution for this is to set up a timer. You can set a timer for the whole Exam or per question in your Exam Behavior tab.

Problem-solving questions

Problem-solving questions do not rely only on memorizing basic information. Problem-solving questions require an understanding of spatial processes and relationships. These answers cannot easily be found in a textbook or on the Internet. You can do this in your Exam by using free text questions, for example.

Hide the results

Showing answers might be good for students, so they know what they did wrong, but they could pass that information on to other students. The best option to prevent this might be hiding all the answers (not showing them on the result page of your test). This setting can be found on the Result page tab of your Exam. Read more here.

Disable auto-complete

You can disable the 'auto-complete' function in a regular browser, so it does not show the answer someone has typed before (if the students are using the same devices in different rounds). Please check this page to see how to do it in Google Chrome.

Online proctoring

With online proctoring, participants are β€œwatched” by a proctor, or supervisor, while taking an exam. When you don't have the option to proctor an exam physically, you could use any program with a ''shared screen'' feature. This could be Zoom, Skype, GoToMeeting, or WebEx. This way, you can keep an eye on your participant while he's taking the test. However, there are a few limitations:

If you have a lengthy Exam you'll need to sit out and wait for those hours too
Both the admin and the participant need to have the program

You can also hire professional online proctoring services to use in conjunction with Easy LMS, such as ProctorU or ProctorExam.

Safe Exam Browser

We also recommend using a safe browser. This secure exam browser is meant to cheat free. Check this tutorial to learn how to set it up for your online Exam. It disables any other applications, so the participant taking the exam cannot cheat his way to success. The process to set up and get it ready for your participants can be quite challenging.

Plagiarism checkers

There are many plagiarism checkers online that you can use to scan the text submitted by your participants (if you are using free text questions). This way, you can find out all about their real sources of inspiration. πŸ˜†
