Scoring an Exam question with multiple correct answers

When you select several answers as correct answers in a multiple-choice question, an extra setting for this will appear at the bottom of the page:

The options

All or nothing
Gives max points only when all correct answers are selected, and all incorrect answers are deselected.

points = max points

Otherwise, no points are given at all.

points = 0

No penalties
Gives points per correct answer selected, and does not deduct points for incorrect answers selected or correct answers deselected.

points = (max points /correct answer count) × correct answers selected

Strict
Gives points per correct answer selected, and deducts points per incorrect answer selected and per correct answer deselected.

points = (max points / correct answer count) × (correct answers selected - incorrect answers selected - correct answers deselected)

Comprehensive
Gives points per correct answer selected and per incorrect answer deselected, and deducts points per incorrect answer selected and per correct answer deselected.

points = (max points / answer count) × (correct answers selected + incorrect answers deselected - incorrect answers selected - correct answers deselected)

Guessing penalty
Gives points per correct answer selected, and deducts points per incorrect answer selected.

points = (max points /correct answer count) × (correct answers selected - incorrect answers selected)

Summary and Comparison of Scoring Options

The minimal number of points of each question is always zero. There is no negative number of points of a question.

Examples

Example 1

A question has [correct A, correct B, correct C, wrong D]
Max points = 3
Answer count = 4
Correct answer count = 3

The participant selects [correct A, correct B, correct C]

The number of points for all five scoring options is the following:

All or nothing: points = 3
No penalties: points = (max points 3 /correct answer count 3 ) × correct answers selected 3 = 3
Strict: points = (max points 3 / correct answer count 3) × (correct answers selected 3 - incorrect answers selected 0 - correct answers deselected 0) = 3
Comprehensive: points = (max points 3 / answer count 4) × (correct answers selected 3 + incorrect answers deselected 1 - incorrect answers selected 0 - correct answers deselected 0) = 3
Guessing penalty: points = (max points 3/ correct answer count 3) × (correct answers selected 3 - incorrect answers selected 0) = 3

Example 2:

A question has [correct A, correct B, wrong C]
Max points = 1
Answer count = 3
Correct answer count = 2

The participant selects [correct A, wrong C]

The number of points for all five scoring options is the following:

All or nothing: points = 0
No penalties: points = (max points 1 /correct answer count 2) × correct answers selected 1 = 0.5
Strict: points = (max points 1/ correct answer count 2) × (correct answers selected 1 - incorrect answers selected 1 - correct answers deselected 1) = 0
Comprehensive: points = (max points 1/ answer count 3) × (correct answers selected 1 + incorrect answers deselected 0 - incorrect answers selected 1 - correct answers deselected 1) = 0
Guessing penalty: points = (max points 1/ correct answer count 2) × (correct answers selected 1 - incorrect answers selected 1) = 0

Example 3:

A question has [correct A, correct B, wrong C, wrong D, wrong E]
Max points = 2
Answer count = 5
Correct answer count = 2

The participant selects [correct A, correct B, wrong E]

The number of points for all five scoring options is the following:

All or nothing: points = 0
No penalties: points = (max points 2 /correct answer count 2) × correct answers selected 2 = 2
Strict: points = (max points 2/ correct answer count 2) × (correct answers selected 2 - incorrect answers selected 1 - correct answers deselected 0) = 1
Comprehensive: points = (max points 2/ answer count 5) × (correct answers selected 2 + incorrect answers deselected 2 - incorrect answers selected 1 - correct answers deselected 0) = 1.2
Guessing penalty: points = (max points 2/ correct answer count 2) × (correct answers selected 2 - incorrect answers selected 1) = 1

Example 4:

A question has [correct A, correct B, correct C, wrong D]
Max points = 4
Answer count = 4
Correct answer count = 3

The participant selects [correct A, correct B]

The number of points for all five scoring options is the following:

All or nothing: points = 0
No penalties: points = (max points 4 /correct answer count 3) × correct answers selected 2 = 2.67
Strict: points = (max points 4/ correct answer count 3) × (correct answers selected 2 - incorrect answers selected 0 - correct answers deselected 1) = 1.33
Comprehensive: points = (max points 4/ answer count 4) × (correct answers selected 2 + incorrect answers deselected 1 - incorrect answers selected 0 - correct answers deselected 1) = 2
Guessing penalty: points = (max points 4/ correct answer count 3) × (correct answers selected 2 - incorrect answers selected 0) = 2.67
